I wanted Cornelisz and his followers to suffer untold pain and misery for their acts. It might sound like the plot of an implausible Hollywood blockbuster, but the terrible tale of the Batavia is frighteningly real.

Mike Dash has provided detailed and interesting background information on all the major characters which mainly includes Francisco Pelsaert, Ariaen Jacobsz and Jeronimus Cornelisz.

I didn’t disagree with them per se, but the analysis didn’t really fit with the rest of the book. Round the ship there was only a little surf, but shortly after that heard the Sea breaking hard round about. Plus one gets a glimpse into the lives of these people trying to make their lives better.
