Egan uses the idea here, though, in a new and witty way and to explore questions of intimacy and philosophy in ways that reminded me a bit of George R. Then the corpse can go into orbit—preferably around the sun. Unlike most of his novels, except for the very first story in the collection, the science isn’t particularly hard.
There are also a couple of biology-based stories: No current Talk conversations about this book. Greg Egan has a reputation for being a very hard science fiction author. If you’ve liked any of Egan’s other work, though, this is worth the buy and the read.

The concepts he was using were completely disjoint from anything I knew about math or physics, and also from anything else I’d ever read in the genre. In a short story, usually the nifty “what if” device is the point of the whole exercise, and if you can’t buy into it you can’t enjoy the story. Like most of Egan’s work, the stories focus on science and ideas, sometimes at the expense of the writing.
